On Pentecost Sunday, May 11, 2008 a total of about 10,400 Christians gathered at the Singapore Indoor Stadium for the 4th Global Day of Prayer (GDOP) officially organized by the Evangelical Fellowship of Singapore (EFOS) with the support of participating churches and organizations. This was during the 2 separate GDOP sessions held that day at the same venue, i.e. a Mandarin/Chinese dialect session at 3 pm (with an attendance of about 4,000 people), and an English session in the evening at 7.30 pm (with an attendance of about 6,000 people).
It was the first time that Singapore had a separate Mandarin/Chinese dialect GDOP session, bringing the leaders of 4 mainline denominations (Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian and Lutheran) and other independent churches together. This represented a major breakthrough for the Mandarin/ Chinese dialect congregation in Singapore. In addition,18 busloads of Chinese Christians from Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and 16 Hong Kong pastors also attended the Mandarin/Chinese GDOP. The evening meeting began at 7.30 pm with a strong drum roll by a team of drummers following the opening welcome. As in the earlier session, it was structured into 3 broad headings of “Honoring God”, “Blessing Nations”, and “Transforming Singapore”.
For the first time too, a separate Children’s GDOP drew a total of about 400 children in the 2 separate GDOP sessions. It was a time of praise and worship unto God; of waiting upon the Lord, listening to Him and journaling the thoughts, impressions, visions and word He released to the children; of prayer for Singapore and the nations; and declaring over the children, that they “may become blameless and pure…” and “shine like stars in the universe … “ (Phil 2:14-16). Many received pictures of the gates of heaven; drew out the complete gospel story; received clear calls to share the gospel; were convicted of personal sins; and prayed for Jesus to be Lord of their families.
For the 90 days’ of blessing thereafter, churches were encouraged to participate in the “My Hope Singapore” evangelistic project jointly organized with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association whereby families and cell groups open their homes to pre-believers for fellowship and outreach through watching an evangelistic video.
We thank God for the greater unity He has wrought in the Body of Christ here through the GDOPs. As we look forward to the next GDOP on May 31, 2009, we give all praise and glory to the Lord our God for what He has done! “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” (Ps. 118:1)
